People move to different locations for various reasons, whether it's due to necessity, such as finding space for a growing family or starting a new job, or simply to try out a new place to call home.

In 2023, the most common reason for middle-class individuals to move was a desire for improved or different housing, according to a HireAHelper.com analysis of Census Bureau data.

In 2023, a study found that nearly 14% of American households in the middle 60% of earners, who make between $30,000 and $150,000 a year, moved due to the desire for new or better housing, while around 10% relocated in search of a more affordable living situation.

Nearly 25% of middle-income households who moved to a different county in the same state, while about 18% moved across state lines, according to HireAHelper.

In recent years, a significant number of middle-income individuals have relocated to Florida, with five of the top ten metropolitan areas experiencing the greatest population growth in this demographic. Due to the absence of state income tax and lower cost of living compared to other coastal states, Florida may be particularly appealing to middle-class Americans.

According to the living wage calculator from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an adult without children would need to earn approximately $46,000 per year to live comfortably in Port St. Lucie. This is significantly lower than the median annual wage of $59,400 earned by U.S. workers in 2024, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Port St. Lucie, Florida, may be an ideal destination for retirees as more than half of its residents are over the age of 65, according to the Census Bureau.
