The U.S. is not among the 43 countries that offer a digital nomad visa, including Costa Rica and Greece.
Recent reports indicate that the U.S. job market has experienced a significant decline since the "great resignation" caused by the pandemic, although it is currently in a relatively stable state. Despite this, job seekers are facing challenges in finding new employment opportunities, which could be particularly challenging for recent college graduates.
The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that employers plan to hire approximately 5.8% fewer new college graduates from the class of 2024 compared to the class of 2023.
Vicki Salemi, a career expert at Monster, advised CNBC that companies are currently offering flexibility, so job seekers should broaden their search.
Salemi stated that they can seek employment opportunities beyond the limitations of a specific zip code based on the quality and quantity.
If you're a recent college graduate or seeking a change of scenery, a digital nomad visa in a country like Costa Rica or Greece could be the perfect solution if you can secure a job that allows remote work.
A temporary work visa for digital nomads enables individuals to remain in a country for an extended duration while working remotely. The duration of stay may differ among countries, but most allow for a maximum of one year.
A digital nomad visa requires you to either be self-employed or employed by an entity outside the country where you plan to reside.
If you are an American living and working in another country and earn more than the minimum amount required, you must file a U.S. tax return, as per H&R Block.
While the US does not have a specific digital nomad visa, it offers other visa options that may enable someone to work as a freelancer in the country.
Digital nomad visas or similar schemes are being offered by the following countries as of May 2024 to attract remote workers.
