Vienna, Austria, was ranked as the world's best city to live for the third year in a row, while no U.S. city made it to the top 20.

This year, smaller cities in the U.S. are outperforming larger metropolitan areas, according to the report.

In contrast to common belief, New York and Los Angeles, two of the most well-known cities in America, did not make it to the top 10 list. They placed 70th and 58th, respectively.

Honolulu is the best U.S. city to live in

For the second year in a row, Honolulu was ranked as the top U.S. city to live in, according to the EIU. It moved up from No. 25 to No. 23 on the global list in 2023.

Because of its high scores in education, infrastructure, and stability, the Hawaii city ranked first among U.S. cities.

Honolulu, being a city in one of the most expensive states in the U.S., is known for its high cost of living, as ranked by CNBC's America's Top States for Business study.

Several factors contribute to the high cost of living in Hawaii, including the high cost of imported goods and the nation's highest gas prices.

In 2024, Honolulu experienced the largest rent increase for 1-bedroom apartments in the western metro area, with a 3.3% increase from $1,783 to $1,841, according to Apartment List data analyzed by CNBC Make It.
