Those airports with over 33 million passengers annually are classified as mega airports. The research evaluated overall passenger satisfaction by assessing their experience along seven essential dimensions, in order of significance.
- Ease of travel through the airport
- Level of trust with the airport
- Terminal facilities
- Airport staff
- Departure/to airport experience
- Food, beverage and retail
- Arrival/from airport experience
The 2024 study, which was based on 26,290 completed surveys from U.S. or Canadian residents who traveled through at least one U.S. or Canadian airport, covers both departure and arrival experiences during the past 30 days. The study was fielded from August 2023 through July 2024 and airports were measured based on a 1,000-point scale of overall customer satisfaction.
He states that there is no slack in demand and airports are generally doing a better job of satisfying passengers, particularly with food and beverage options.
No. 1 best mega airport: Minneapolis-Saint Paul International
The airport with the highest score on the list is the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, with a score of 671 out of 1,000.
The airport is strategically situated between the two major cities of Minnesota, Minneapolis and St. Paul.
"Taylor remarks that one positive emotion people experience about airports is the sensation that it resembles a mall. The Minneapolis Airport refers to itself as an airport mall, where passengers walk through the center and are unaware that they are in an airport rather than a mall with planes parked outside."
In 2022, more than 31 million travelers used the airport, making it the 19th busiest in North America in terms of annual passenger numbers, according to the airport's website.
According to a report from Cirium, the airport was ranked as the world's most punctual in 2023.

This year, the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport ranked No. 2 with a score of 643 out of 1,000.
