As overtourism becomes a growing concern among American travelers, environmentally safe travel is gaining importance.

Major destinations worldwide are now charging fees to combat overtourism and its impact on the climate.

Tripadvisor, in collaboration with the Global Destination Sustainability Movement, evaluated 100 destinations with a rating of four bubbles or higher over the past 12 months (from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023). Additionally, Tripadvisor utilized traveler reviews that contained terms related to sustainability, such as "environmentally friendly," "eco-tourism," and "waste reduction," to determine the world's top most sustainable cities.

While no American cities were included in Tripadvisor's first list, Montreal in Canada was the only destination in the Americas to make the cut.

The most sustainable travel destination in the world: Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark, is the most sustainable destination, according to Tripadvisor.

Denmark's capital city is one of Europe's oldest and cleanest, and the country as a whole has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.

According to The Telegraph, over two-thirds of the city's hotels have obtained an eco-certificate and the city has vending machines that exchange money for empty cans or plastic cups.

Besides its numerous bike paths and train lines, Copenhagen is also known for its busy local airport, which ranks among the busiest in the Nordic region.
