Bain & Company is the U.S. company with the best leadership, not a tech titan or hospitality giant.

According to Glassdoor, its inaugural 50 Best-Led Companies ranking, which was released on Tuesday, measures how effectively bosses communicate and foster healthy company cultures based on anonymous employee ratings.

The tech industry has the highest number of companies on the list, with 12 companies, while consulting, finance, and retail follow closely behind, each with six companies represented.

Daniel Zhao, Glassdoor's lead economist, states that many businesses share a common trait: relatively transparent leadership, which is highly valued by today's workforce.

According to Zhao, what distinguishes leaders is their capacity to foster a constructive and captivating work environment, in addition to communicating openly and transparently.

Here are the top 10 companies on Glassdoor's list:

  4. Nvidia
  5. Raymond James Financial
  6. Equitable Advisors
  7. AMD
  8. Samsara
  9. In-N-Out Burger
  10. Autodesk

Bain & Company has been recognized as the best U.S. company to work for in 2024 by Glassdoor, marking its sixth time holding this title. The consulting firm's high employee satisfaction is attributed to its focus on providing "good career opportunities" and leaders who set a positive example, according to Zhao.

"Leaders must not only claim to have a good culture but also demonstrate it through their actions, as seen in cases like Bain."

Workplace trust and transparency

Despite high-profile layoffs at tech companies like Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, these companies still made it to Glassdoor's rankings. In fact, Microsoft even placed at No. 42.

Zhao explains that tech companies typically have flat organizational structures, young leadership, and workers who expect transparency from executives.

"While it's true that employees expect more from their leaders, it's also true that good leaders are rewarded with trust and engagement from their employees, which may not always be possible in other industries where leaders and employees have a more distant relationship."

Workers in the U.S. are hesitant to provide feedback to management due to fear of retaliation, according to a survey conducted by The Harris Poll in February, which was commissioned by Glassdoor.

By fostering a "culture of psychological safety," leaders can ensure that employees feel comfortable sharing their opinions without fear of retaliation, allowing for the incorporation of employee feedback into the company's improvement efforts, Zhao explains.

"According to Zhao, leadership is a collaborative effort that extends beyond the CEO and C-suite. Companies that excel at leadership are those where leadership is strong throughout the organization."

The Glassdoor report ranked CEO job performance and senior management based on reviews submitted by U.S.-based employees between March 2023 and February 2024, drawing from companies with more than 1,000 employees that received at least 100 ratings of CEO job performance and senior management.
