The minimum salary required for a comfortable lifestyle in every U.S. state.
According to a SmartAsset analysis, it takes a single person to earn over six figures to live comfortably in the most expensive U.S. states.
The monthly income required to meet the definition of "comfortable" is calculated based on a 50/30/20 budget allocation, where 50% of income is used for necessities, 30% for discretionary spending, and 20% for savings or investments.
Using the MIT Living Wage Calculator, the income required for each state was determined based on the cost of basic necessities.
The five most expensive states for single workers, in terms of the annual income required to live comfortably, are presented here.
- Massachusetts: $116,022
- Hawaii: $113,693
- California: $113,651
- New York: $111,738
- Washington: $106,496
To live comfortably on your own in these states, you'd need to earn nearly double the median income of most single earners, which is approximately $60,000 per year, according to Labor Bureau data.
A 50/30/20 budget may not be feasible for most single individuals since the national median for living comfortably alone is $89,461.
The "singles tax" refers to the additional expenses that single individuals face, which can be significantly higher than those of people who live with others. This includes not only housing but also extra costs for groceries, travel, transportation, and entertainment.
In order to afford living alone, individuals may have to look for alternative ways to cut expenses, such as downsizing to a smaller apartment or reducing spending on non-essential items like travel.
In each state, the income required for a comfortable lifestyle is listed in ascending order.
