The Mega Millions jackpot reaches $825 million, and the amount you'd receive after taxes varies by state in the U.S.
The Mega Millions jackpot has reached $825 million, making it the seventh-largest prize in the game's history, just before the Friday night draw.
In order to win the jackpot, you must match all five white balls and the gold Mega Ball.
The amount you'd actually receive depends on the tax laws in your state and the payout option you choose.
The annuity option for winners pays the full jackpot amount over 30 years, while the one-time cash lump sum is worth about 46% of the total and is chosen by many winners for its immediate payout.
When you win a jackpot, you'll need to pay both federal and state taxes, with the IRS automatically withholding 24% of your winnings. However, since the jackpot would push you into the highest tax bracket, you'll owe a total of 37% when you file your tax return.
The tax rate on lottery winnings varies between 2.5% and 10.9%, except for eight states that do not impose any taxes on lottery winnings: California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Additionally, five states, namely Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah, do not participate in the Mega Millions lottery.
The next draw for the lottery is on Friday at 11 p.m. ET. If no winner is selected, the jackpot will carry over to Tuesday at 11 p.m. ET for the next draw.
