The Global Entry fee is increasing for the first time, so apply before October 1st to secure the lower rate.
The cost of avoiding airport lines is about to rise.
The expedited security program Global Entry is experiencing a price increase for the first time, with both new and renewing members now paying $120 instead of $100, as announced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The price hike will take effect on October 1st, but you can still secure the current price by applying or renewing before then. However, you can only renew your membership a year in advance, so if your current membership is valid beyond October 2025, the higher fee will apply.
It's better for parents to wait until Oct. 1 to renew their membership, as children under 18 will no longer have to pay the $100 fee starting that date.
How the Global Entry program works
The widely-used Global Entry program facilitates expedited border crossing for low-risk travelers entering the United States.
Travelers can enjoy memberships that last five years, which enables them to bypass long customs lines and, for U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, provides TSA PreCheck, expediting the security screening process for domestic flights.
In order to qualify for Global Entry, you must undergo a background check for any criminal or customs violations and attend an in-person interview. During the interview, you will be required to provide biometric data, such as fingerprints and a photo, and respond to inquiries regarding your travel history.
Renewals are typically a more straightforward process and may not always necessitate an interview.
