San Francisco is one of the 10 most expensive cities in the U.S. to raise kids, with an annual cost of nearly $40,000.

Raising kids can be costly, and the location can significantly increase your yearly expenses.

The cost of raising a child varies widely between cities in the U.S., with an average yearly cost of $22,989 across the 100 most-populous metros, according to an analysis by Creditnews Research.

In San Francisco, the annual cost of raising a child is $37,340, which is the highest among all cities. However, in Jackson, Mississippi, the annual cost of raising a child is significantly lower at $14,661, resulting in a difference of approximately $23,000.

According to a study, the average cost of raising a child until the age of 18 across all 100 cities is $413,810.

According to Department of Labor data, the average extra costs that two working parents would pay for a child in a given year include expenses such as child care, food, housing, health care, transportation, and other necessities.

It's not surprising that cities with the highest expenses for children also have some of the highest housing costs in the country, with housing being the largest expense in a family's typical budget, as per the study.

High housing costs can make it difficult for families to afford a comfortable lifestyle in large cities, as the annual cost of having one child is nearly half the current U.S. median household income of $79,090, according to Motio Research.
