Since 2009, the federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25 per hour, but many states and cities have increased their minimum wages to provide their residents with a more stable income.

On January 1, 21 states increased their minimum wage, including Alaska, now at $11.91 per hour; Connecticut, now at $16.35 per hour; and Nebraska, now at $13.50 per hour.

Local wage floors have been gradually increasing in cities and counties, sometimes exceeding state minimum wages. The Economic Policy Institute has been tracking these changes.

The localities with the highest minimum wages, as per EPI, are primarily located in Washington and California, with minimum wages of $16.66 and $16.50 respectively. These minimum wages are close to or above $20 per hour. Some localities have different wage tiers based on the size of the company.
