Over 1 million public service workers have had their student debt forgiven by President Joe Biden—here's the breakdown by state.
President Joe Biden and his administration hit a major milestone this October.
Over 1 million borrowers have had their student debt balances forgiven by the administration through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, as announced by the Department of Education on Oct. 17.
Since its inception in 2007, only 7,000 borrowers had qualified and received debt forgiveness through PSLF before Biden assumed office.
To be eligible for loan forgiveness under PSLF, borrowers must work in public service and make qualifying payments on their loans for a decade before any portion of their balance is discharged.
Since 2018, widespread mismanagement of the program has resulted in 99% of borrowers being denied loan forgiveness, despite their belief that they had earned it. Both servicers and borrowers have struggled to identify and track qualifying payments, as well as to verify loan and employer eligibility, leaving most borrowers still burdened with their debt.
"Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona stated on a press call that the current progress of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is historic. Prior to President Biden's presidency, only 7,000 public servants had ever qualified for the program, which was plagued with dysfunction."
Biden has prioritized fixing the PSLF program during his presidency, resulting in the clearance of loan balances for over 1 million public service workers, including teachers, nurses, and government employees who made 120 monthly payments before receiving nearly $74 billion in debt cancellation.
The administration has disclosed the number of workers in each state who have had their debt forgiven through PSLF during Biden's tenure, as well as the average amount each worker had cleared.
Nearly 87,000 borrowers in California have had their public service debt forgiven, making it the state with the most relief recipients. New York, Texas, and Florida follow closely behind in that order.
On average, public service workers in the District of Columbia received more debt relief than any state, with borrowers in Georgia having the second-highest average debt forgiven per borrower at $91,132.
The 10 states with the highest debt per borrower that was cleared through PSLF under the Biden Administration are:
- Georgia: $91,132
- Mississippi: $88,090
- Florida: $83,963
- South Carolina: $83,446
- Alabama: $81,490
- Maryland: $80,683
- Louisiana: $80,670
- Tennessee: $78,767
- California: $76,998
- Nevada: $75,331
