Nursing is a job that can easily be done as a side hustle.

Helena Faustin, a neonatal intensive care unit nurse who started a high-paying cooking blog in 2018, claims that every nurse she knows has a side hustle or a per diem job in addition to their full-time job.

That's in part because their schedule lends itself to them.

According to Daniella Flores, a side hustle expert who uses they/them pronouns and whose mother was a nurse, hospital nurses often have three twelve-hour shifts or four ten-hour shifts, providing them with sufficient time to pursue a side hustle.

Here are four gigs for nurses to consider.

Outpatient care

Nurses can choose to do a side job in their field in different locations.

  • Outpatient clinics are less stressful, according to Flores, who notes that they pay well compared to other nurse side hustles that aren't actual nursing. These types of jobs can be found on job boards such as nursejobboard.com, jobs.ana.org, and nursefern.com for remote work. Nationwide, part-time nurses earn an average of $39 per hour, according to ZipRecruiter.
  • During the fall and winter, "nurses can administer seasonal flu shots to assist," says Flores. The pay for this service varies, with one New York-based healthcare provider offering $15 per hour for vaccination administrations.
  • Care.com connects nurses with seniors who require in-home care or assistance in senior living communities. In contrast to a hospital setting, "it's so much lower stress," says Kathy Kristof, CEO and founder of Sidehusl.com, "because you're typically looking after just one person."

Legal consulting

Nurses seeking a side hustle that's different from their daily work can consider consulting, which can be done through platforms such as Expert Institute, where experts provide opinions for legal cases.

Nurses are particularly sought after by consultants for reviewing case documentation, deposition appearances, and court testimonies, according to Kristof.

According to the site, nurses can earn $208 per hour for reviews, $275 per hour for depositions, and $431 per hour for court appearances.

Tutoring

Nurses can also help those on their way to entering the field.

Flores suggests that nursing students could benefit from tutoring services offered by alumni association members, who could also provide their services on platforms like Wyzant, Varsity Tutors, and Facebook groups specialized in nursing.

One nursing tutor on Wyzant is charging $65 per hour.

Medical writing

Medical writing is a viable career path for nurses who possess strong writing skills.

Nursefern.com suggests that there are numerous paths to pursue medical writing, such as creating patient brochures, writing textbooks and articles.

The American Medical Writers Association offers a range of resources for those interested, including a directory of medical publications and a job platform for freelance opportunities.

According to Indeed, the average hourly wage for medical writers is $67.
