Living in Mexico for six years after retirement has been a luxury, but it also comes with new, unexpected challenges.
Retirement brings with it a fresh set of challenges that I didn't anticipate.
A lack of schedule can be empowering
My job was a significant aspect of my identity, and I always gave my utmost effort. As my own boss, I was responsible for all aspects of my business, including ad sales, design, editing, writing, and distribution. When your office is at home, it can be challenging to disconnect from work and view weekends as days off.
While productivity is still important to me, it is no longer the only factor I use to determine the fulfillment of my life. I had to rediscover the importance of contentment, joy, and personal satisfaction.
A lack of structure can throw you off balance
Retirement brings with it more leisure time, allowing many individuals to reflect more deeply on their lives. The feeling of uncertainty and confusion can arise as they contemplate whether their accomplishments are the extent of their purpose. At times, I experience a sense of desperation or determination to fulfill some of my long-standing aspirations. I frequently reassess my bucket list.
So, what do you do with yourself every day?
I'm learning that a less busy lifestyle doesn't have to be boring. I'm finally able to take more time for self-care, such as a daily siesta, regular yoga and stretching, and staying in touch more with family and friends.
You need a new mindset to thrive
I have experienced challenges such as strained relationships, financial stress, difficult bosses or roommates, and the difficulties of raising children.
Not having to work after retirement is just the beginning. You can embrace new possibilities and explore new opportunities, such as living abroad, that you never thought possible before.
