What about 13 cents for a house in Croatia?

Since 2018, Legrad, a northern Croatian town, has been promoting settlement in the area by providing houses at low cost as part of an initiative.

The town, situated near Hungary and with a population of approximately 2,000 people, has experienced a decline in population since the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1918.

Another batch of houses is now available for purchase at a discounted price of 13 cents, as announced by government officials in January.

To be eligible to purchase one of the houses, applicants must be under 45 years old, in a marital or extramarital partnership, have no criminal record, and not already own property, though officials do not specify if this applies globally or only in Croatia.

Since the program began in 2018, the number of children has increased, leading to the construction of a new daycare center.

Five houses in Legrad have been sold and occupied by families, with three families welcoming new members during their move-in. This has led to an increase in the number of children in the daycare center, as stated by Ivan Sabolić, the mayor of Legrad, in an interview with HRT.

In 2021, Legrad sold 17 of the 19 empty houses and abandoned construction sites it put up for sale at 1 kuna each. The municipality offered to pay $25,000 kuna (about $3,558) for any necessary renovations.

The town provided a 20% discount or up to 35,000 kuna (about $5,056) for first-time homebuyers. It's uncertain if the same incentives will be offered this year.

Mussomeli, a town in Sicily, gained popularity for selling off dilapidated homes for just 1 euro.

Lorraine Bracco, who starred in "The Sopranos" and "Good Fellas," also bought a 1 euro home in Sambuca di Sicilia, following the trend.
