If every country follows Australia's example, the world can prevent future pandemics, says Bill Gates.
Bill Gates has been warning of a potential new pandemic for months, and he believes that one country has already shown how to effectively manage it.
According to Gates, if every country follows Australia's example, the next outbreak wouldn't be classified as a pandemic.
Preventing a new outbreak from becoming a pandemic would likely require stricter policies in the early days of the outbreak, according to Gates.
To sustain their policies, countries may need to withstand public pressure.
Australia's Covid response has been praised as a model to follow. This week, the country reopened its international borders for the first time since March 2020. Returning citizens and approved international travelers have been required to quarantine in hotels guarded by police and military members. Additionally, Australia's states have periodically locked down their respective borders.
Despite thousands of Australians protesting lockdowns, the measures have proven effective as only 20 out of 100,000 Australians have died from Covid, according to a New York Times analysis of John Hopkins University data. This is significantly lower than the 283 out of 100,000 Americans who have died from Covid, according to the same analysis.
Australia has a high vaccination rate, with 81% of its population fully vaccinated against Covid, while the U.S. has a lower rate of 65% fully vaccinated, according to data from John Hopkins University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, respectively.
Despite struggling to control the omicron variant of Covid-19, Australia's death rate from the virus is stabilizing, with a 7-day average of 38 daily Covid-related deaths as of February 23. According to John Hopkins University data, 155 people died during the peak of omicron in Australia on January 28. However, the variant has swept through the rest of the world with little hindrance.
Despite its small population and being an island without any land borders, Gates still considered Australia a "true outlier" in terms of its success.
Gates stated that they carried out diagnostics, enforced quarantine measures, and have a lower death rate compared to other wealthy nations. He added that everyone had the ability to do so.
Australia's states have periodically locked down their respective borders throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
