While most employers are open to negotiations, only 45% of U.S. workers initiate a conversation about salary, benefits, or other changes when presented with an offer. Despite this, 85% of employees who request such changes receive at least some of what they asked for.

So why don't more people give it a shot?

It is unlikely that the company will rescind its offer, and the main reason for candidates' worry is their lack of negotiating experience and feeling unprepared.

DON'T MISS: The ultimate guide to negotiating a higher salary

While it's challenging to prepare for salary negotiations, it's crucial to seek advice from reliable online sources. However, the reality is that reading an article and negotiating with a hiring manager in person are two distinct tasks.

As a former recruiter and the CEO of FairComp, I suggest utilizing AI to increase your chances of success in negotiations. This way, you can enter the conversation with confidence and secure the best possible outcome.

Here's how — and exactly which prompts I use.

1. Research compensation data

Understanding your market value is crucial, and ChatGPT is the most effective research tool I've utilized.

Compare the data you collect with friends and colleagues in similar positions.

2. Practice negotiating with ChatGPT's voice feature

Many individuals forfeit money opportunities because they are hesitant to request or lack knowledge on how to do so. Negotiating can be nerve-wracking for candidates, which is understandable. On average, individuals will have approximately 12 jobs throughout their career, as stated by Zippia.

On average, candidates negotiate less with recruiters than recruiters do in a month.

Through practice, we can build confidence, and AI can be a valuable tool for it, especially when an experienced mock negotiation partner is not available.

I evaluated three of the leading AI products: ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Currently, ChatGPT's voice model seems the most authentic, making communication feel like you're speaking with a hiring manager. The free version performs well, but you may consider upgrading to the $20/month version based on your usage.

To get your reps in, click on ChatGPT's voice feature and give it this prompt:

The conversation with the AI felt incredibly realistic, and when I asked for compensation that exceeded its budget, it requested justification with data. We exchanged ideas back and forth, just as I would with a hiring manager. Finally, it offered feedback on areas for improvement in our next interaction.

I'd argue that it's the best preparation tool on the market, even with those gaps.

Keep experimenting like a prompt engineer

Persistence is key in prompt engineering, not technical skills. Engineers experiment with various inputs to improve AI responses. The more they experiment, the better the results.

Rewritten sentence: "I am open to discussing the terms of the offer."

  • What benefits or perks should I negotiate besides salary?
  • What is the process for determining the total worth of a compensation package that encompasses equity, bonuses, and benefits?
  • How can I inquire about potential promotion and/or career advancement opportunities within the company?
