To earn six figures while working remotely, you may want to explore a career in data analytics.

By analyzing raw data, data analysts help businesses understand their performance better. They use tools such as Excel, SQL, and Tableau to identify trends and create visualizations. They also examine metrics like sales, website traffic, and regulatory risks to help organizations make more informed decisions.

Vicki Salemi, a career expert at Monster, tells CNBC Make It that the job "drives so much" in terms of business operations.

Google's vice president and founder of Grow With Google, Lisa Gevelber, states that data analytics is a rapidly expanding field that provides competitive salaries, job security, and flexibility.

The demand for skilled data analysts has surged as businesses increasingly rely on data to inform their decisions. According to a June 2024 report from Upwork, data analytics was one of the most in-demand skills this year.

In the next decade, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that data analytics and science jobs will increase by at least 30%, which is significantly faster than the average growth rate for all other occupations.

In 2024, searches for "data analytics skills" and "data analytics jobs" reached a five-year high on Google. According to Gevelber, there are currently approximately 300,000 unfilled data analytics positions in the U.S.

To secure a job in data analytics and discover the top employment prospects:

Getting into data analytics without a degree

Amid a labor shortage in the field of data analysis, companies are increasingly opting to hire analysts without bachelor's degrees.

A high school diploma or GED and an online certification or training are typically required for most data analytics jobs. For instance, Google offers a $49/month data analytics certificate through Grow with Google, while IBM and CompTIA also provide comparable courses.

Gevelber states that data analysts should excel in working with spreadsheets and coding languages, visualizing and presenting data findings, and, most importantly, problem-solving.

Additionally, she suggests mastering the use of AI to organize and arrange data, compose programs, and devise creative visualizations.

Gevelber stated that candidates who can rewrite sentences into alternative versions will have a significant advantage in the job search. Many individuals in the data analytics field have not yet mastered this skill, but it can greatly enhance productivity in highly technical jobs.

Six-figure salaries and remote opportunities

Recent research from Lightcast indicates that while data analysts are required in all industries, there is a particularly high demand for talent in manufacturing, health care, technology, and finance.

Other popular data analytics roles include business systems analyst, data architect, and database administrator.

According to Google's data analytics career certificate page, the median pay for entry-level data analytics jobs is approximately $93,000. On the other hand, Glassdoor reports that more experienced data analysts earn a median salary of $110,000.

Numerous remote data analyst job openings exist on Indeed and ZipRecruiter, with some offering salaries of over $150,000 per year.

"According to Gevelber, regardless of where you reside or which industry you're interested in, the need for individuals who can comprehend, interpret, and apply data to inform crucial business decisions is immense. In today's world, data analysts are in high demand."
