Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, identifies climate change as the world's most significant issue, stating that inaction could lead to catastrophic consequences.
Eric Schmidt, after leaving Google, has concentrated on addressing major worldwide issues, with climate change being the most urgent, in his opinion.
Google's former CEO and chairman, Schmidt, warns CNBC Make It that if we don't tackle climate change, we'll face dire consequences. He points to the alarming rate of melting in both the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets.
In 2017, Schmidt left his position as Google's executive chairman and established Schmidt Futures to fund groundbreaking research in areas such as artificial intelligence, biology, and energy. Over the past five years, he has come to realize that climate change is not only a future issue but also a pressing problem that requires immediate attention.
Schmidt, 66, warns that if the ice sheets melt, it will take "a million years for them to be recovered," putting the future of our grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren at risk.
Research published in January 2021 reveals that the world is losing 1.2 trillion tons of ice annually, which is a 60% increase from the 1990s. Experts predict that the situation will worsen, and if the Antarctic ice sheet collapses, global sea levels could rise by about three feet within the next 1,000 years, according to calculations from Harvard researchers.
Schmidt, who was appointed CEO of Google by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 2001, played a crucial role in transforming the company from a small Silicon Valley startup into a global tech giant.
Schmidt argues that the energy industry must undergo significant transformations in order to address climate change. However, he notes that many individuals and organizations are preoccupied with short-term concerns, which hinder progress on this critical issue. Despite this, Schmidt emphasizes the importance of addressing climate change as a major challenge that requires our attention and effort.
Artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly contribute to the fight against climate change, as Schmidt Futures is already utilizing AI to enhance climate modeling research through VESRI. Additionally, Schmidt wrote a book last year titled "The Age of AI" to provide a vision of the technology's future possibilities.
"The AI situation is 10% into its journey towards general intelligence, with large language models being the first step, enabling people to have conversational interactions with computers," he states.
Picture the ideal AI system that assists you," Schmidt remarks. "It comprehends you. It accompanies you. It's on your phone... and you rely on it.
Schmidt aims to develop an AI system that assists in generating ideas and proposing solutions to enhance people's lives.
“That’s the future,” he says.
