Chappell Roan's path to fame has been marked by numerous twists, turns, and detours on the way to becoming a breakout pop star.

At 17 years old, Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, whose real name is Roan, signed to Atlantic Records after gaining popularity on YouTube. In 2017, she released her debut EP "School Nights" and a year later, she relocated from her hometown of Willard, Missouri to Los Angeles.

In 2020, she released a song called "Pink Pony Club," which was inspired by a night at a gay club. The song gained popularity on social media and was named one of the best songs of the year by USA Today. Vulture also crowned it the Song of the Summer in 2021. However, commercially, it did not meet Atlantic's expectations, and the label eventually released her. Roan shared this information with Pitchfork last year.

Roan, who had been working as a barista for several months, began taking on part-time jobs such as a nanny, production assistant, and donut shop staffer to cover her expenses. At the same time, she gained a small following for her music on TikTok.

"My music was not particularly significant, and it did not experience the same level of success as Doja Cat's 'Say So.' TikTok was primarily used to showcase my personality and inner workings, but it was a challenging experience as an independent artist while also having a part-time job."

The 26-year-old has become a sensation in the music industry, with four singles charting on the Billboard Hot 100, guest appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "The Late Show," a pizza party with Elton John, and a new album set to be released.

"Roan stated on "The Tonight Show" last month, "I feel like I was right all along. I mean, I feel kind of like I made it already.""

'It's really hard to keep up'

Roan's journey from a struggling independent artist to a sensation was likely aided by a connection: her producer at Atlantic, Dan Nigro, also works with Olivia Rodrigo. Roan was an opening act during Rodrigo's Sour Tour in 2022 before signing with Island Records last year.

As Rodrigo gained more recognition, Roan experienced a similar rise in popularity. Roan's performance as an opening act for Rodrigo's Guts World Tour in February resulted in a 32% increase in streaming for her over a single weekend, according to Billboard. Following this success, Roan released her single "Good Luck, Babe!" in April, which quickly gained traction on streaming platforms such as Spotify and the Billboard Top 100.

Roan's sudden rise to fame brought new career challenges, as she admitted during a recent performance in Raleigh, North Carolina. "I just want to be honest with the crowd: I just feel a little off today," she said. "I think my career is just kind of going really fast and it's really hard to keep up. I'm just being honest ... I'm having a hard time today."

Experts offer tips for managing work-related stress, and one such tip is to change the grammar in self-talk to improve mental toughness and resilience, as suggested by performance coach Steve Magness in a 2022 CNBC Make It article.

Instead of using first-person pronouns that can evoke negative emotions, it's better to tell yourself that "you can recover from this mistake" or "you will come out of this job search with your dream role."

Jocko Willink, a former Navy SEAL, overcomes mental overwhelm by creating a massive to-do list and completing each task until he emerges from his slump, as he shared in a 2019 interview with Make It.

"Willink stated that he prefers to go on a hardcore offense and work for 12-14 hours each catch-up day. He believes that it is better to suffer for three days and grind than to bear the continual burden that weighs on his back for months."
