Christian McCaffrey, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, is eager to enhance his performance following a Super Bowl appearance with the San Francisco 49ers.

For years, McCaffrey began by outlining every detail of his goals on the football field.

"McCaffrey, while promoting Dymatize's "Formulated for More" scholarship, shared with CNBC Make It that he used to be a huge goal setter and would write down everything he wanted to achieve. He believes that setting goals holds a lot of power."

In the previous season, which was one of his finest, the 28-year-old did not establish specific goals. Instead, he concentrated on a single, comprehensive objective: maintaining optimal health to ensure he could play every Sunday.

""Goals can limit or put unnecessary pressure on you, but as a running back, your health is crucial to success," he says."

McCaffrey had never entered a season without specific objectives before, which was a significant change for someone who had played football for more than half his life.

Allowing himself to let go of control and simply focus on his well-being resulted in great rewards.

"I was like 'Just play ball and forget about everything else,'" he says. "And all my goals came true. It wasn't that I didn't care, but I wanted to be the best version of myself every day, no matter what that meant."

Experts have warned that excessive or specific goal-setting can be counterproductive, which aligns with McCaffrey's decision to forgo a lengthy list of things to accomplish and his subsequent success.

In a TED Talk last year, Emmanuel Acho, a former NFL player, revealed that his career and success skyrocketed when he shifted his focus from particular field goals to striving for "excellence" in general.

He devoted his life to the game, but when it led to a television job, he accepted it, which resulted in his success as a sports analyst.

McCaffrey is now focused on improving every day with his new approach in hand.

"McCaffrey remarks, "You're always striving for improvement, as my old college strength coach used to say, 'You're either getting better or worse, there's no staying the same.'""
