Cava CEO emphasizes the significance of this personality trait as a crucial factor for success, despite many perceiving it as a weakness.
At some point in their lives, many individuals experience self-doubt about their abilities to attain their aspirations.
According to Cava CEO Brett Schulman, the lack of confidence isn't a fatal flaw, but rather what you need to be highly successful. He recently shared this sentiment on Wondery's "How I Built This with Guy Raz" podcast.
Schulman stated that imposter syndrome, although not ideal, is beneficial because it prevents overconfidence and the belief of invincibility.
A 2020 study funded by Crossover Health found that up to 82% of people experience feelings of being a fraud at some point in their lives. This anxiety can prevent them from pursuing opportunities such as promotions or volunteering for big projects at work.
If I'm not good enough, I can improve by learning more or working harder on self-improvement.
""Barbara Corcoran, a real estate mogul, stated at Fiverr's Bridge the Gap webinar that successful individuals often have self-doubt, as it drives them. She added that she has never met a secure person who was a top performer," said Corcoran."
Imposter syndrome is a red flag for Corcoran, a judge on ABC's "Shark Tank," when considering investments in startups and entrepreneurs.
"Corcoran stated that she searches for a competitor who is mostly insecure because she believes that she has found a winner. This individual possesses ambition and will work twice as hard, which, in her opinion, is the positive aspect of feeling like an impostor."
What to do during 'moments of doubt'
Schulman finds it easy to put himself in someone else's shoes when they have self-doubt. He is part of the 82% who experience imposter syndrome, and he relies on his colleagues and leaders for guidance when these feelings arise.
His advice: Reach out to your network whenever you feel incapable.
"Cold reaching out to business leaders you admire or respect is not something to be shy about, according to Schulman. He found that having sounding boards around you can help validate your thinking and provide support during moments of doubt or when the business seemed overwhelming."
To succeed in your career, it's important to have a personal board of directors consisting of a mentor, a sponsor, a close friend, a point expert with deep expertise in your field, and a connector who will always pick up the phone on your behalf.
To form some relationships, like a close friend or mentor, naturally, you can use online networking platforms like LinkedIn or attend conferences and events related to your field, as advised by Tatum in 2022.
"To advance, surround yourself with individuals who hold higher standards for you than you hold for yourself, she advised. Ensure that everyone in your network has a defined role."
