Work doesn't wait for Todd Graves, even on vacation.

The CEO of Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers wakes up early at 4:30 a.m. while traveling to join his family at the beach by 11 a.m.

Graves views work-life balance as prioritizing family time in his schedule to prevent burnout while expanding his business. Although he could reduce his workload if he was content with his level of achievement, he is unlikely to halt his efforts to grow his restaurant chain, which is projected to generate nearly $5 billion in sales this year.

Graves, the CEO of Raising Cane's, states that he is as busy as anyone he knows and travels as much as anyone he knows. However, he is able to manage his schedule in a way that allows him to be present for important events with his children, family, and friends.

Balancing the demands of running a billion-dollar company with spending quality time with his family is a challenge, he admits. To achieve this balance, he schedules family time in his calendar and makes a conscious effort to be present during those times, even when he's exhausted. His wife has even brought their two children to his office for dinner and playtime so he could see them before their bedtimes, he shared with CNBC Make It last week.

"Graves emphasizes the importance of diligence in planning, stating that there is always something to work on and one must constantly do it. Despite feeling tired, one will remain enthusiastic for special times with family."

Graves' "extreme logistics" approach involves implementing timeboxing, a technique that involves scheduling specific tasks with allotted time slots, and once the time is up, moving on to the next task on your calendar without any delay.

Bestselling author and behavioral design expert Nir Eyal advised CNBC Make It in June that using a timebox calendar can help with procrastination. If you don't prioritize exercise, family time, friend time, and focused work, it won't get done.
