When Covid is widespread, it's advisable to wear both face masks and pants before leaving home.

"Why do societies make you wear pants?" Gates asked rhetorically, chuckling at the annual Munich Security Conference earlier this month.

Bill Gates, the billionaire Microsoft co-founder and health philanthropist, made comments about indoor masking before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidelines on Friday afternoon. According to the new guidance, which takes into account local Covid caseloads, hospitalizations, and hospital capacity, more than 70% of Americans are no longer advised to wear face masks indoors, although they can still choose to do so.

If the numbers rise in the coming months or years, indoor masking could become recommended again, according to new guidelines. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, CDC director, stated during a White House briefing last week that they want to give people a break from mask-wearing when metrics improve, but have the ability to reach for them again if necessary.

Gates predicts that as Covid enters its endemic stage, cases and hospitalizations will fluctuate like the flu, requiring masks to be a part of everyone's seasonal wardrobe, just as he said at the conference.

In the future, mask-wearing may become necessary," he stated. "We'll experience Covid rebounds, but they'll be similar to typical seasonal flu outbreaks, and we won't shut things down.

A recent CDC study found that wearing an N95 or KN95 respirator indoors decreased a person's chances of testing positive for Covid by 83%, while surgical masks lowered the odds by 66%, compared to 56% for cloth masks.

During flu season, the CDC advises that masks can aid in preventing the flu. At the Munich conference, Gates stated that masks may remain useful due to the possibility of another pandemic.

Positive early results have been reported by multiple teams working on pan-coronavirus vaccines, which Gates himself has funded with billions of dollars, according to Gates' statement.

Gates believes that in the upcoming decade, a vaccine for eradicating a disease can be developed. He stated that there is already substantial research on a universal flu vaccine, and the data on its effectiveness is encouraging.
