Emerging professionals can benefit from Barbara Corcoran's career advice during graduation season.

"Always choose the best boss," advised Corcoran, a millionaire real estate entrepreneur and investor, in a TikTok video last week.

Choosing a job solely based on salary or a company's reputation can be tempting, but it won't matter if you and your boss are incompatible, Corcoran explained.

""Your happiness at work is more influenced by a good boss than the job's pay," she stated."

Achieving your dream job requires acing your interview, and this ultimate guide provides the necessary tips and strategies.

Corcoran learned the lesson from experience: She had several bad bosses in her 20s who didn't give recognition, lacked integrity and undermined her work, she said in a 2019 interview with Yahoo Finance.

In a 2019 episode of her podcast, "Business Unusual," she stated that this behavior can make the workplace seem unappealing and lead to burnout.

"Finding the right boss is the more challenging part of finding work that you enjoy."

"Having a bad boss for an extended period can harm your self-esteem, as Corcoran stated. From personal experience, I can attest to the negative effects of having a bad boss. It can make you feel insignificant and disrespectful towards yourself, putting you in a precarious situation."

How to spot a good boss

According to CEOs and workplace culture experts, three common traits are evident among the best bosses.

  1. Empathy
  2. Adaptability
  3. Initiative

According to Caitlin Duffy, director of research at consulting firm Gartner, having bosses who can put themselves in your shoes and show genuine kindness and care for their employees is essential for job satisfaction.

In the current post-pandemic workforce, employees expect their workplace leaders to address their increasingly complex and sensitive personal needs, as Duffy stated in 2022.

A good boss will assess a challenge at work and make the best decision for both the company and its employees, according to executive coach Rohan Verma, who spoke to Make It in February.

Corcoran observed that bosses with these qualities can make even the most challenging job more satisfying and meaningful.

Your job satisfaction is determined by your supervisor, according to her.
