An interactive AI interview can be aced with just one thing, according to the CEO who conducts them.
You may be interviewed by AI if you're searching for a new job.
According to Brent Orsuga, a headhunter and recruitment expert, AI-conducted interviews will become a norm by early next year, as stated in a CNBC Make It interview last month.
Aaron Wang, co-founder and CEO of California-based AI recruitment platform Apriora, tells CNBC Make It that the company conducts up to 1,000 AI-powered interviews every day for companies seeking to hire for a variety of positions, including senior software engineers, electricians, and baristas.
Alex, Apriora's AI recruiting agent, automates the entire recruitment process by being trained on "the entirety of the internet," from scheduling to conducting interviews.
Wang describes her as a highly intelligent recruiting colleague.
The AI will read the job description and create a set of questions to evaluate candidates, which can be customized by the employer according to their specific requirements.
Wang states that Alex conducts interviews with candidates in a conversational manner, adapting its responses to match those of a human recruiter. Wang notes that Alex can provide information about the company, adjust its questions based on candidate responses, and generate detailed feedback notes, as well as identify top candidates for the recruiter following the interview.
Wang suggests the best way to prepare for an AI-powered interview is by:
Have a strong internet connection
Simon Taylor, a former Disney recruiter, revealed that due to a "shortage of time," traditional recruiters typically spend only three to five seconds reviewing resumes.
While AI recruiters may have the capacity to review resumes and conduct numerous interviews simultaneously, Wang asserts that all that is truly necessary is a reliable internet connection and the ability to articulate your skills and experience.
Wang's clients sometimes request that Alex conduct interviews with all job applicants without reviewing resumes or cover letters, giving each candidate an opportunity to showcase their skills and advocate for themselves.
"Wang believes that it is a great way to bring equity into interviewing, stating that it does not matter if one did not attend a resume workshop to create the perfect resume or filled their resume and cover letter with keywords."
Think of it like any other interview
Wang suggests that talking to an AI recruiter like Alex should be a "very fluid conversation" where you can take as much time as you need to answer questions thoroughly and get asked appropriate follow-ups depending on your answers.
Wang remarks, "It's simply back-and-forth. She won't interrupt you."
Alex is trained to understand various accents and conduct interviews in different languages, and Wang adds that she has a cheat detection feature that flags interviews with suspicious activity, such as keyboard tapping after every question or the sound of someone else in the room answering questions for a candidate.
Expect a shorter interview process
Experts suggest that candidates in a traditional interview process for a non-managerial position should anticipate three to five rounds of interviews. Wang states that with Apriora, there will be a consolidation of interview stages.
"With an AI that possesses an engineer's knowledge, you can conduct both the recruiter phone screen and the engineering technical round in a single call," he states.
Wang states that when he hires for his own company using Alex, the process has been streamlined to two interviews: an initial interview with Alex and a final round with someone within the company. He usually has Alex contact candidates, conduct interviews, identify the top three, and schedule interviews with him.
Wang claims that Apriora has employed the last three engineers and two salespeople through the use of Alex, after interviewing thousands of engineers using the software.
Wang acknowledges that people may initially be hesitant to interact with AI like Alex, but he emphasizes that a platform like Apriora has the potential to enhance the candidate experience.
""A great AI can foster a really wonderful and delightful candidate experience, as it can make you feel less judged and more flexible about when you take the interview," Wang says."
