America's go-to supermarket has shifted from Trader Joe's to Costco.
America's favorite supermarket chain is no longer Trader Joe's.
According to the annual American Customer Satisfaction Index Retail and Consumer Shipping Study, despite receiving the same score as in 2023, Monrovia, Calif.-based supermarket has dropped to fourth place behind the three chains tied for first: Costco, Publix, and H-E-B.
The fifth largest retailer in the United States is Sam's Club, which is owned by Walmart.
The satisfaction score of chains is determined by several factors, including store layout and hours, merchandise selection, staff courtesy and helpfulness, and the speed of the checkout process.
The scores were determined through interviews with 40,264 customers who evaluated their recent experiences at the largest chains in the country between January and December 2023.
This year, Costco, Publix, and H-E-B all received an 85-point score, just barely surpassing Trader Joe's 84-point rating. In terms of value, Costco and H-E-B performed exceptionally well, while consumers highly praised Publix for its staff courtesy and store cleanliness, as per the study.
According to Forrest Morgeson, director of research emeritus at ACSI, customers were attracted to retailers that offered the greatest value for their money in an interview with Real Simple.
During the holiday season, consumers who wanted to save money responded positively to retailers who offered promotions, had successful sales, or provided a better shopping experience through private label offerings.
The supermarket category's score increased by 4% to 79 due to decreasing food inflation, according to a study.
