Affordable Airfare: Follow these 3 tips on National Cheap Flight Day.

As the peak summer travel season comes to an end, it's time for National Cheap Flight Day.

Don't be deceived by the misleading name and book your next trip.

"According to Katy Nastro, a travel expert at Going, there isn't a specific day when flights will be at their cheapest, as it's not always the case."

The best time to book air travel is during the Goldilocks window, which is when the best rates tend to be found.

The Goldilocks window for domestic travel is one to three months before your flight, while for international flights it is two to eight months ahead of your trip.

National Cheap Flights Day is not just about timing, here are three expert-approved tips for finding affordable airfare.

1. Practice, practice, practice

It's okay to browse flights for your desired trip even if you haven't bought tickets yet. Regularly checking flights in the weeks or months before booking can help you determine your budget and expectations.

To compare prices, Nastro suggests using search engines such as Google Flights, Skyscanner, and Momondo.

""Regardless of the location you search, obtaining a diverse sample of flights from various regions will provide a more comprehensive understanding of weekly and monthly flight prices," she advises."

Skyscanner's senior global PR manager, Gemma Jamieson, advises that investing time in research can ultimately lead to financial savings.

"Airlines are using data, traveler behavior, and mapping to be competitive in specific areas. By comparing prices, going further, and shopping around for a longer time, you can save a significant amount of money."

2. Don't drag your feet

Waiting until the last minute to search for cheap flights during the holiday season is the biggest mistake you can make.

"During peak season, airfare tends to increase, and it's best to book in advance to avoid higher prices," Nastro advises. "It's crucial to avoid last-minute booking during the holidays to secure the best deals."

She aims to correct the widespread belief that airlines will suddenly increase prices due to a sold-out flight.

""According to Nastro, it's not accurate to assume there's an unlimited number of backup flights available for scheduling," he explains."

3. Flexibility will save you money

If you don't have a set destination or dates, you're in the best position to find the cheapest airfare possible.

""Keeping an open mind is the best way to save money, as demonstrated by the success of destinations like Croatia, which has become a popular European summer vacation spot," Jamieson argues."

Finding an affordable flight will be easier with flexibility.

Being flexible about the airlines you choose to fly with can lead to better rates and more convenient flight times, even if you don't have points or status with a specific airline.

"If you limit yourself to one or two specific carriers, you're missing out on great fares, says she. While people may have preferences, expanding your search can help you find affordable flights."

To get the best rates, Jamieson suggests considering not only round-trip flights, but also one-way flights in each direction to check if other airlines have better deals.

"Jamieson advises exploring options and considering different airlines for outward and return flights."
