The annual North American Airport Satisfaction Study by J.D. Power ranked large airports in North America, with those having 10 to 32.9 million passengers per year being included in the study.

In order of importance, the study assessed overall passenger satisfaction across seven key dimensions.

  1. Ease of travel through the airport
  2. Level of trust with the airport
  3. Terminal facilities
  4. Airport staff
  5. Departure/to airport experience
  6. Food, beverage and retail
  7. Arrival/from airport experience

The research on the 2024 study was conducted using 26,290 completed surveys from individuals residing in the U.S. or Canada who had recently traveled through a U.S. or Canadian airport within the past 30 days. The study encompasses both departure and arrival experiences, including those at connecting airports.

The study, conducted from August 2023 to July 2024, evaluated airports' overall customer satisfaction on a 1,000-point scale.

The best large airport: John Wayne Airport, Orange County

The John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, has been ranked as the best large airport in 2023, after finishing in the No. 2 spot in 2023. It received a score of 687/1,000.

In 2017 and 2018, the airport was ranked No. 1. This year, it performed exceptionally well in three key areas of the study: ease of travel, arrival experience, and level of trust.

According to Michael Taylor, Sr. Managing Director of Travel, Hospitality, Retail and Customer Service at J.D. Power, the airport received a high ranking due to its ease of access.

"He explains that they are in Southern California, where there's a big car culture, people love to drive, and parking at the airport is extraordinarily convenient. In contrast to other airports in the area, such as LAX, they are parking right next to the terminal."

Taylor states that the airport improved its interior by repainting it and decreasing the number of screens, announcements, and their volume to minimize visual and audio pollution, resulting in a calmer environment.

During heavy traffic times, people desire tranquility. They seek to escape the chaotic masses, which the airport achieved several years ago to enhance the experience.

In 1979, the California airport was renamed in honor of actor John Wayne, who lived near Newport Beach and passed away that year.

The John Wayne Airport, located in Orange County, serves approximately 11.7 million annual passengers and has direct flights to over 40 destinations. It is situated about 35 miles south of Los Angeles.
