According to etiquette experts, there are 5 places where you should always tip, except for these scenarios.
Recent years have seen Americans becoming increasingly frustrated with the frequent and rising requests for tips.
A recent survey from Bankrate found that 35% of adults view tipping negatively and say things have "gotten out of control."
The question of where to draw the line when it comes to who receives a gratuity is a feeling that has many people wondering. In some cases, it is clear-cut, according to Ted Rossman, a senior industry analyst at Bankrate.
"I don't feel bad not tipping at self-checkout. However, tipping is expected at pick-your-own strawberry farms, sit-down restaurants, hair salons, barber shops, and food delivery services."
According to Bankrate's survey, only 67% of adults in the US always tip at restaurants. Additionally, just over half of respondents always tip haircutters and food delivery drivers, while only 4 in 10 tip taxi and rideshare drivers, and a mere 22% tip hotel housekeepers.
Thomas Farley, also known as Mister Manners, an etiquette expert and keynote speaker, was taken aback by the survey.
While tipping is generally expected in five specific situations, it's important to note that "always" is a strong word. There may be instances where it's acceptable not to leave a tip, according to etiquette experts.
At a restaurant: 'downright rude' or 'deliberately sloppy' service
Not leaving a tip at a restaurant is justified only when things are extremely dire.
"According to Rossman, the federal minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13 an hour. Therefore, if you don't tip in those situations, you are effectively taking money out of the server's pocket."
It is not the server's fault if restaurants do not compensate their employees. Additionally, things that may seem like bad service, such as food arriving late or a subpar dining experience, are not always the server's fault.
So what would it take to not tip a server?
"Farley remarks that your service is not only neglectful but also deliberately rude and sloppy, which he finds objectively belligerent. He states that he has never encountered such behavior in his lifetime of dining out."
If a server behaves rudely, nastily or racially, "you should not reward them with a tip," says Farley.
Elaine Swann, a lifestyle and etiquette expert and founder of the Swann School of Protocol, advises that instead of simply leaving the restaurant without paying, it is better to speak with management and explain the reason for not tipping the server.
"Leaving a lower tip after addressing management will make it clear to them that you were not just being rude or ignorant about tipping, according to the speaker."
A tip is 'a baseline for good service'
When it comes to those who provide services, such as cab drivers, etiquette experts suggest that you should usually tip.
But the service has to actually be there.
"According to Farley, tipping is generally expected for good service, and if a customer receives poor service, such as a crew cut instead of a bob, not tipping the barber would accurately reflect their dissatisfaction."
If you didn't receive the service you requested, it's acceptable to reduce or withhold a tip, according to etiquette experts. However, if a cabbie drove recklessly or got lost for an hour, you don't have to tip them.
No need to tip hotel staff on days without housekeeping services.
These individuals, including barbers, delivery people, rideshare drivers, and housekeepers, rely on customer tips to make ends meet. If they make your life easier, it's important to show your appreciation by leaving a tip, even if it means going a little out of your way.
Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and founder of the Protocol School of Texas, suggests leaving small bills for hotel housekeepers.
"Housekeeping directly benefits guests as they clean the toilet and wash the sheets used by guests, making it a gritty and underpaid job, according to Gottsman."
Some tips are up to your discretion
While only 15% of Americans consistently tip furniture and appliance delivery people, 11% always tip when picking up takeout food, and 10% always tip home services and repair people. However, etiquette experts suggest that tipping in these situations is not mandatory.
If you received exceptional service, it may be worth tipping extra, such as when curbside delivery workers bring a heavy piece of furniture into your home, Farley suggests.
While a counter worker may recognize your order and offer special treatment upon entering a store, it is not necessary to tip someone who hands you a muffin at a bakery counter, according to Farley.
"If they say, 'Oh, we just have some that may be coming out of the oven — let me go check for you,' that might be a different story," he says. "That's someone who is going above and beyond to give you an exceptional experience."
According to Bankrate's survey, the fewest Americans tip home repairs or service people, so you can save money by keeping the cash in your pocket.
"Most likely, you pay service professionals like plumbers on an hourly basis, with a very high rate."
