Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky isn't afraid to pick favorites.

Chesky stated in Fortune last month that effective leaders must set high standards for work quality and quickly solve problems.

"Fair criteria must be used to pick favorites, but if you can't identify high performers and exemplify excellence, you'll face significant consequences," Chesky stated. "This is not good leadership."

Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb, which is valued at $85 billion, invites 80 to 100 employees to biannual meetings where important business decisions are made. Some of the same individuals are invited repeatedly, but Chesky believes that selecting who can offer valuable insight is not a political issue.

Ginka Toegel, a professor of organizational behavior at the International Institute for Management Development, advised bosses to be cautious about the optics of following Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky's workplace strategy. Blatant favoritism can make other employees feel like outsiders, she said on Harvard Business Review's "IdeaCast" podcast in June.

According to a 2022 McKinsey survey, the most frequent reason individuals left their jobs during the Great Resignation was due to unresponsive leadership.

Effective leadership involves figuring out how to delegate tasks among your team members without favoring some over others, according to Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky.

"Chesky stated that it is important to have individuals monitoring for unconscious bias and ensuring honesty within the organization. Surveys can be conducted to reinforce assumptions, but the idea that a CEO should not have discretion in deciding who should be in a room is incorrect."

Chesky's team was fortunate because he had "numerous preferences," he stated.

""I don't have a single favorite, but I'm always texting or calling employees," he said."
