NFL star accidentally turned self-help book into a best-seller.

On Sunday, during the Eagles' game against the Packers, A.J. Brown was seen reading "Inner Excellence" on the sidelines. This moment quickly became viral, resulting in a surge in book sales.

Currently, on Tuesday morning, the book that claims to enhance mental abilities for optimal performance and life is the top-selling book on Amazon.

In 2020, "Inner Excellence" was released, emphasizing the importance of introspection and mindset in achieving success in one's chosen field.

"In the book's introduction, Jim Murphy argues that most people have it backwards, trying to be successful in order to be happy. Instead, he suggests that focusing on improving our inner world will lead to greater success."

Brown finds "Inner Excellence" helpful in maintaining mental sharpness during games, as he views the challenges of football as being 90% mental and 10% physical.

"Brown stated that the book suggests that having a clear mind and remembering that nothing else matters, having a clear conscience, and being willing to take risks are key to refocusing after scoring a touchdown or dropping a pass. Additionally, the book emphasizes the importance of humility in not being embarrassed."

In the book, Murphy presents the argument that the world's perception of competition is flawed. He believes that this view of it as a zero-sum game hinders individuals from adopting a more successful mindset.

Murphy identified five common refrains about competition and how someone with an "Inner Excellence" mindset would view them differently.

  • "Experiencing the moment, developing inner strength, and continuously growing are far more empowering and lasting than just winning," he writes.
  • Murphy contends that results are an inconsistent indicator of success and failure, as one can achieve poor performance and still win, or excel and still lose.
  • The opponent is our ally in the game.
  • "Growth is not possible without failure," he argues. "There is no such thing as true failure, only learning opportunities." This perspective is echoed by one of the greatest athletes of all time: Tom Brady. The legendary quarterback believes that his early failures and rejections in sports helped shape him into a seven-time Super Bowl champion.
  • Murphy suggests that fierce competitors develop emotional control and use mistakes to improve.
