A happiness expert suggests 3 effective ways to maintain focus at work amidst distractions in your personal or professional life.
It can be challenging to concentrate on work tasks due to various reasons such as news alerts, personal issues, stress, and emotions.
Happiness expert Jessica Weiss suggests that there are several strategies to help you stay on track, particularly during times when you feel overwhelmed and unfocused.
Here are three tricks she recommends trying.
Give 'your body the chance to feel'
Spend some time each day to acknowledge and experience your emotions.
Weiss advises setting aside 15 to 20 minutes to express and process emotions such as worry, anger, and frustration, in order to effectively move through them rather than holding them in.
Some people experience anxiety in the morning, while others feel it in the afternoon or evening. Set aside 15-20 minutes to manage your anxiety whenever it occurs.
The main objective is to release emotions from our physical body and into the world, according to Weiss. One way to do this is by talking to someone who will listen, journaling, or exercising.
'Focus on the stuff that you can control'
Weiss advises focusing on controllable things while working, she states.
Instead of focusing on tasks that are dependent on others, it's better to concentrate on those that you have control over, as it reduces anxiety and increases satisfaction with life, she suggests.
Instead of considering the entirety of tasks, concentrate on achieving "small victories."
Instead of focusing on a large sales quota by a specific date, try breaking it down into smaller, achievable tasks, such as making five sales calls a day. This way, you can set a goal that makes you feel accomplished at the end of the day, says Weiss.
Get into a flow state
Dedicate one to two hours per day to get into your flow state, or a level of focus in which you become completely immersed in the activity you're doing and perhaps even lose track of time. Weiss recommends this.
To maximize productivity, choose a task that challenges you slightly, minimize distractions, and set a specific objective for the end of the time frame. Instead of selecting an easy task, aim to push yourself beyond your comfort zone.
According to Weiss, engaging in a challenging activity for two hours can bring a sense of satisfaction and remind us of our ability to concentrate, which is particularly important when we struggle to focus.
