A majority of young adults aged 18-43 report feeling stressed at work, with 48% of 18-25-year-olds and 51% of 26-43-year-olds experiencing tension during the workday, according to the American Psychological Association's 2024 Work in America survey.

To enhance happiness in life and at work, happiness expert Jessica Weiss advises building friendships at work.

To overcome any obstacle while working, "having a friend to talk to and find solutions with" is beneficial, she suggests.

'Take lunch at the same place every time'

Weiss encourages trying two tactics.

"Regular interactions with people are the foundation of strong friendships," she argues. To foster such relationships, she recommends establishing a routine in the workplace. For instance, she suggests taking lunch at the same spot every day or sitting in the same spot in the conference room consistently. This could encourage more conversations to occur naturally.

By engaging in casual conversations with acquaintances, those talks could eventually lead to friendships.

'One friend at work will make a difference'

Some workplaces present more challenges to creating those connections.

To address the situation where none of your colleagues at a startup with five people or while working from home seem open to a particular kind of relationship, Weiss suggests expanding your professional network.

Growing your professional network doesn't have to be limited to your workplace, but can extend to your industry as a whole.

Weiss believes that having just one friend at work can have a significant impact on your professional social circle.
