A gardener's teachings were one of the most significant lessons in Nvidia CEO's life, contributing to their success.

While traveling internationally, Jensen Huang learned his biggest career lesson from a gardener he met.

"Huang, the billionaire co-founder and CEO of computer chip company Nvidia, shared during a commencement speech at the California Institute of Technology on Friday that he used to work from one of their international sites for one month each summer. Additionally, when their kids were in their teens, they spent a summer in Japan and visited the Silver Temple during one weekend in Kyoto."

Huang encountered a man working in a large garden on a day that was "unbearably hot, humid and sticky." Despite the scorching heat, the man meticulously cared for the moss using only a bamboo tweezers to sift through the foliage, which perplexed Huang at first.

"Huang, 61, said, "I walked up to him and asked, 'What are you doing?' He replied, 'I'm picking dead moss. I'm taking care of my garden.' I then asked, 'But your garden is so big,' and he responded, 'I have cared for my garden for 25 years. I have plenty of time.'""

Huang said that their brief interaction with the gardener resulted in one of the "most profound learnings in my life." The gardener's dedication to his craft and doing his life's work taught Huang the importance of taking the time to focus on what truly matters.

'I always say I have plenty of time, and I do'

Huang stated that by managing his time effectively, he can concentrate on what is most important to him, which is aiding his employees in their growth and development.

"I consistently start my day with my highest priority work, ensuring that I've already accomplished my most important tasks before even beginning my work. When people interrupt me, I respond with 'I have plenty of time,' and I always have."

According to Rainer Strack, a senior partner emeritus at Boston Consulting Group, people frequently underestimate the time required for their top priorities, which can lead to unhappiness, stress, and burnout.

Strack advised writing down daily activities and rating them on a scale of one to 10 for importance and satisfaction. Afterward, consider the amount of time spent on each activity during the week.

If your passions are being neglected, make some changes to your routine, advised Strack.

'Find a craft that you want to dedicate your lifetime to perfecting'

For 31 years, Nvidia has evolved from a startup to a tech titan, providing technology to major companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, Tesla, and OpenAI.

Huang, the sole CEO of the company, encountered numerous challenges, including Nvidia's initial graphics processing unit nearly bankrupting the company and several partnerships and licensing agreements that turned sour, as he stated.

Last week, Nvidia, under his leadership, became one of the world's few companies to surpass a $3 trillion market cap.

In his commencement speech, Huang demonstrated his dedication to persistence through the final piece of advice he imparted.

"He advised, "Find a craft to dedicate your lifetime to perfecting and focus on honing the skills of your life's work. Prioritize your life, even with so many things going on and things to do, you will have time.""
