Victoria Carroll began doing voiceover work by chance.

In 2015, a 33-year-old actor who had just performed in a play in the Czech Republic was approached by an audience member who asked if she would be interested in auditioning to voice a character in the video game "Kingdom Come: Deliverance." The actor agreed, landed the role, and discovered that voiceover work could be a lucrative career path.

Since then, she has established a full-time freelance career as a voiceover artist, recording various types of content and collaborating with companies such as "Google, Apple, Nike, National Geographic, Adidas, Pepsi, Coke." She states that she primarily obtains her work through Fiverr, where her gigs begin at $30 for 50 words.

In 2023, she earned over $251,000 through voiceovers, as revealed by CNBC Make It's review of documents. For those aspiring to follow in her footsteps, she offers the following advice.

Start with 'really low prices and really long hours'

Carroll recommends putting in long hours and keeping prices minimal at first.

She established her Fiverr profile in 2018 and accepted all work at the beginning. Despite the challenges, she maintained a high level of dedication to growing her businesses and clientele.

She kept her prices low to attract customers and sometimes even did work for free to build up her portfolio. She's in touch with other successful Fiverr freelancers who started the same way, with really low prices and really long hours.

'Deliver really good work'

Carroll also advises making sure your customer service is top notch.

She emphasizes the importance of delivering high-quality work and responding quickly to client requests.

Generally speaking, Carroll will only do one free revision. After that, she'll charge for changes. However, if a client is willing to pay, she's happy to keep tweaking. Recently, she worked with someone who requested six revisions altogether.

Ensuring high-quality work and accepting revisions makes clients feel satisfied with the product. Additionally, on a freelance platform like Fiverr, receiving positive reviews is crucial, as it indicates that you are a reliable and skilled seller, which can increase your visibility and attract more clients.

'99.9% of the voiceover actors I know record in a closet'

Finally, Carroll recommends investing in good tech.

To produce high-quality recordings, she advises that you need a good quality microphone. She began with a snowball mic, which costs around $50 today. Later, she upgraded to a Shure SM7, which can cost around $400.

I know many voiceover actors who record in a closet, as it is small and quiet, providing a good buffer for sound. Some also add extra sound paneling. Carroll, who resides in Los Angeles, records in her closet or a home studio.
