Jay Chaudhry knows what he's looking for in a hire.

The billionaire, who is 66 years old, has founded five companies in total, including his most recent venture, a cybersecurity company called Zscaler. Currently, he serves as the CEO of the company, which has 7,000 employees. As of Tuesday, Zscaler's market cap is valued at $25.4 billion.

Chaudhry states that when evaluating potential hires, he considers three factors, which could be applicable for both top-level and entry-level positions.

Here's what he prioritizes.

Passion

Chaudhry values passion above all else, he states.

"According to him, when individuals possess passion and conviction, they naturally put in effort without hesitation. This drive motivates them to persist and overcome obstacles. Moreover, he emphasizes that work becomes enjoyable for them, leading to exceptional outcomes."

Chaudhry evaluates candidates based on their enthusiasm during the hiring process. He believes that passionate individuals have already completed their preparation before the interview and ask insightful questions. They are eager to grow within the company.

Willingness to learn

The second most important quality is a curiosity and willingness to learn.

According to Chaudhry, the way people work, where they work, and how they work are all rapidly changing in today's world. Those with a natural curiosity can quickly learn the new ways of working and stay up-to-date on how to succeed in their jobs. They can also help their companies move forward by utilizing new technology and tools.

Chaudhry may give candidates an exercise during the interview process to assess their ability to research and present information. By evaluating their response, he can determine what they have learned.

Adaptability

The final thing Chaudhry always looks for is adaptability.

Chaudhry emphasizes the importance of adaptability when hiring from other companies because every company has unique processes and tools. He wants employees who can quickly adjust to new environments and work effectively in any setting.

To assess the adaptability of his interviewees, Chaudhry poses open-ended questions. As an illustration, he queries, "Can you describe a time when things weren't going smoothly with a project?" He then inquires about the process they used to determine that the project was not working and how they ultimately found success.
