  • The House Ethics Committee will hold a meeting on Wednesday to discuss its report on former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who has been appointed by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the next attorney general.
  • Before abruptly resigning from Congress, the Ethics Committee had been probing Gaetz for alleged sexual misconduct, potential illegal drug use, and other actions.
  • If Gaetz is appointed as attorney general, he would become the head of the Department of Justice, which had previously investigated him for suspected sex trafficking of a minor.

The House Ethics Committee will hold a meeting on Wednesday to discuss its report on former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who has been appointed by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next attorney general, according to NBC News.

Several key Republican senators are calling for the release of the report on Gaetz to the Senate so they can consider his confirmation as AG if and when Trump officially nominates him.

The Ethics Committee had been probing Gaetz for suspected sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, and other unethical behavior. The committee had planned to discuss the report last Friday, but they postponed the meeting.

Last week, Gaetz, who represented a Florida congressional district, abruptly resigned from the House after Trump announced he would nominate him for AG. As a result, the Ethics panel's jurisdiction over him came to an end.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has stated that he would "vehemently urge" the committee not to publish its report on Gaetz, asserting that it would be "a grave violation of protocol, tradition, and the rule's spirit."

If Gaetz is appointed attorney general, he will lead the Department of Justice, which previously investigated him for suspected sex trafficking of a minor. Despite the investigation, the DOJ did not charge Gaetz with any criminal offenses, and he maintains his innocence.

A lawyer representing a woman who claims to have had sex with Gaetz when she was underage called for the Ethics report to be made public on Thursday.
