On Friday, special counsel Jack Smith requested a judge to halt the proceedings in the criminal election interference case against President-elect Donald Trump, indicating the likely conclusion of the prosecution.

Smith stated that postponing the remaining pretrial motion deadlines would allow the prosecutor's team to evaluate the unique situation of Trump's electoral victory and decide the best course of action in accordance with Department of Justice policy.

The Government will submit a status report to the Court by December 2, 2024, regarding the outcome of its deliberations, as stated in a filing by Smith in federal court in Washington, D.C., where it was noted that Trump's lawyers did not object to the requested pause.

President Joe Biden won the 2020 election, and Trump is accused of committing crimes while attempting to reverse the outcome.

Smith's prosecutions against Trump were dealt a blow with his win against Vice President Kamala Harris earlier this week.

Trump intends to dismiss Smith and anticipates compelling the DOJ to halt the legal proceedings.

The DOJ policy prohibits the department from pursuing legal action against a president during their term.
