  • In an interview with NABJ journalists, Vice President Kamala Harris discussed her economic policy proposals and their potential to increase opportunities for young Black men.
  • She presented an economic-oriented pitch to young Black male voters who have been leaning towards Donald Trump in this election.
  • In July, Trump faced criticism from NABJ journalists during a meeting he had with them, as he questioned Harris' racial background and referred to her as a "DEI hire."

On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris outlined her economic plans to benefit young Black men, a crucial voting group for Democrats, according to polls showing Republican ex-President Donald Trump gaining traction among this demographic in the current election cycle.

"Harris emphasized in a panel interview with the National Association of Black Journalists that it is crucial not to assume that Black men are in anyone's pocket. Instead, she stated that she is working to earn the vote, not relying on her race to secure it."

Over a quarter of Black men under 50 years old back Trump over Harris, according to a new poll by the NAACP.

Harris emphasized an economic argument to win votes, as she had previously embarked on a "Black men's economic opportunity tour" before becoming a presidential candidate.

She highlighted her efforts to increase access to startup capital by directing billions of dollars into community banks.

Harris stated that there are numerous entrepreneurs in the community who possess great ideas, a strong work ethic, ambition, aspiration, and a dream, but they lack the necessary relationships to obtain capital or grow their small businesses.

The Democratic presidential candidate mentioned plans such as a $50,000 small business tax exemption and the removal of medical debt from credit scores, which she believes would address economic disparities in Black communities.

"If we all do better economically, Harris said, we will all benefit,".

To tackle two significant weaknesses of the Democratic party during this election cycle, proposals could be put forth to improve public views of the economy and attract young Black men who tend to vote for Trump.

In July, prior to Harris assuming the Democratic ticket, NBC News polling revealed that 25% of Black voter respondents aged 18 to 49 preferred Trump over Biden.

In the 2020 election, Biden received 92% of Black voters' support, as per a Pew Research Center analysis. This raised concerns among Democrats about the possibility of losing a significant portion of prime voting age Black adults to Republicans.

Nostalgia for the pre-Covid economy may be contributing to Trump's strong support among Black voters in this election cycle, according to polls.

During the Biden-Harris administration, the high cost of living emerged as the top voter concern, with the U.S. economy struggling to recover from the inflation caused by the pandemic.

Harris is pitching herself as the candidate for economic relief while simultaneously shoring up Black voter support in her campaign.

In July, Trump faced criticism from NABJ journalists during a meeting with him, as he accused Harris of being a "DEI hire" and criticized the interviewers for asking about his past racist remarks.

"Trump's NABJ appearance was the same old show, characterized by divisiveness and disrespect, according to Harris, who added that the American people deserve better."
