On Wednesday, Donald Trump, the president-elect, announced that he would nominate Matt Gaetz, a Republican congressman from Florida, to be the next U.S. attorney general.

Trump praised Gaetz on Truth Social for his efforts to reform the Department of Justice.

"As Attorney General, it will be an honor to serve President Trump," Gaetz stated on X.

If the Senate confirms him, Gaetz will replace Merrick Garland as Attorney General, who led the Justice Department in a sex-trafficking investigation against the congressman.

The DOJ ultimately declined to charge Gaetz.

An investigation into whether Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct or illicit drug use is still ongoing by the House Ethics Committee.

In September, Gaetz stated that he would no longer participate in the panel's probe, despite denying any wrongdoing.

The 42-year-old lawmaker, known for his unwavering support of Trump, has fiercely condemned the DOJ probe and trial of Trump by special counsel Jack Smith.

In October 2023, Gaetz filed a motion to remove McCarthy as House Speaker, which was supported by eight other Republicans and all House Democrats, resulting in the GOP conference being thrown into turmoil.

On Wednesday, during his first trip to Washington, D.C. since defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, President-elect Trump was accompanied by billionaire Elon Musk and others, as reported by NBC News.
