The attorney general of New Mexico sued , accusing the company of designing its Snapchat app in a way that facilitates sexual abuse of children through sextortion schemes.
Raul Torrez, the Attorney General, stated that Snap has deceived users into thinking that their photos and videos would be deleted, but predators can permanently capture this content and have created a virtual yearbook of child sexual images that are traded, sold, and stored indefinitely.
The New Mexico Department of Justice will continue to hold Snap accountable for prioritizing profits over children's safety through our litigation against the company, said Torrez.
Previously, Torrez filed a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, accusing the social media giant of facilitating the sexual exploitation of children.
In May, a New Mexico judge rejected Meta's motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
CNBC has requested comment from Snap about Torrez's lawsuit.
