The North Carolina Board of Elections launched an investigation into the America PAC political action committee, founded by Elon Musk, following a complaint that the group was collecting personal data from website users without fulfilling its promise to help users register to vote.
The North Carolina Attorney General's Office and Michigan's secretary of state are also scrutinizing the practices of America PAC, which supports Trump's campaign.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, also owns the social media company X, which was previously known as Twitter. Prior to being banned from the platform, former President Donald Trump was a frequent user of Twitter.
The ban was lifted after Musk purchased Twitter for $44 billion.
Trump Media, a publicly traded company owned by the former president, owns Truth Social, which he uses for his social media messages.
