With kids in tow, this British-Australian couple has mastered the art of traveling 10,000 miles.
Ingham, Australia, is my hometown, and I am proud to be from the small sugarcane farming community.
Its blue skies, sandy beaches, and Australia's longest single-drop waterfall are impressive, but its location at the northern end of Queensland's state poses a problem for me.
I left for London 17 years ago on a two-year working holiday visa, driven by the desire to explore Europe. Little did I know that a chance encounter with a handsome English stranger in a bar one evening would lead me to become a permanent resident of the United Kingdom, where I now raise two young boys with British accents who are clueless about Vegemite.
To break up the distance during our yearly return to Australia, which involves multiple long-haul flights and a 10-hour time difference, we book stopovers.
We always strive to discover new places each time.
Stopover: Seoul, South Korea
Pros: Seoul's street food, kid-friendly Korean Air
Hotel28, a cinema-themed hotel, welcomes kids with popcorn and gift packs upon arrival. The mini bar is complimentary too. Located in the vibrant Myeongdong district, known for its Korean barbecue, fried chicken, noodle, and seafood restaurants, Hotel28 is an ideal choice for travelers seeking a unique accommodation experience. Nearby, at the Myeongdog Night Market, we indulged in street food like fried baby crab while enjoying the performances of K-pop buskers.
Korean Air made getting to Seoul a breeze for parents, as they can pre-order children's meals such as pizza, hot dogs, and barbecue chicken. Additionally, they offer kid-sized headphones for in-flight entertainment.
If there's no connecting flight on the day of departure, Korean Air offers a free night's stay at the five-star Grand Hyatt Incheon. We made use of this on our return trip from Australia. The stay included a sumptuous breakfast buffet, featuring both Korean and Western dishes, before boarding the 14-hour flight from Seoul to London.
Cons: Traffic and translation issues
Over half of South Korea's population resides in the Seoul metropolitan area, resulting in intense traffic in the city. Our taxi ride into the city took an hour, but the return trip to the airport during rush hour was three times as long. We arrived 30 minutes before our flight departure, but were not permitted to check in. Korean Air compensated us with a free flight to Australia, a week later. Despite this, the mistake still causes me emotional pain.
If you have food allergies, it may be better to communicate your needs in Korean using a translation app or consider changing your stopover location.
Stopover: Bangkok, Thailand
Pros: Cheap flights turn it into an Asian getaway
A great place to stop is Bangkok, which is between London and Brisbane, and from there, it's affordable to reach Thailand's renowned coastlines.
We flew for 1.5 hours to Krabi, a beach town, and stayed at the ShellSea Krabi resort for a week. Our four-month-old slept in his pram near the pool while our oldest drank mocktails, took Thai boxing lessons, and collected shells from the beach. We dined outdoors under homemade gazebos and attended a local music festival.
In Bangkok, we visited the night market and tried banana fritters and barbecue skewers, while our oldest ate a whole bag of fried insects for dinner.
Cons: Bangkok's busyness
Traveling with two young kids in Bangkok may not be ideal due to the challenging walking conditions caused by the constant traffic and the questionable air quality.
We encountered fewer airport issues during our journey in Krabi compared to our experience in Seoul. Our flights departed from Don Mueang International Airport, a less congested airport located in the north of the city.
Stopover: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Pros: Attractions galore
Dubai is home to the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, and one of the world's largest waterparks, the Aquaventure Waterpark. It was an exciting place to take our then four-year-old, and we built family days around those two attractions.
The 25hours Hotel is an attraction in itself, with a bustling lobby and a rooftop pool that overlooks the architecturally impressive Museum of the Future.
During Ramadan, we were present at the hotel's main restaurant and partook in the iftar buffet, which included a variety of curries and sides, as well as a grill outside offering freshly carved doner meat, served with jeweled rice and salads. The meal was well-received by local families, who eagerly gathered for the special feast.
Cons: Pricey
The cost of a family day pass to Aquaventure is approximately $260, and the combined entrance to the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Aquarium is around $243.
Stopover: Singapore
Pros: Late checkout, choice flights
We visited Singapore before having children, but we may return as it was an effortless destination. We opted for a club room at the Mandarin Oriental, which provided late checkout, a Champagne breakfast, and a complimentary dim sum afternoon tea. Late checkout would be advantageous with the kids, allowing them to shower and change before the next flight.
We've found that Singapore has the most connections to Australia among any Asian city we've visited. Changi Airport is designed to keep kids entertained, featuring a butterfly garden, koi carp ponds, and free massage chairs.
Cons: Lacks the buzz
Singapore is an excellent destination with its clean, easy-to-navigate streets, diverse food options, and high level of English. However, if I had to nitpick, I would say that it lacks the excitement of Seoul and Bangkok and is more expensive.
