box office domination continued over the holiday weekend.

During the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, "Moana 2" surpassed $1 billion, making it the third 2024 release from the studio to achieve this milestone after "Deadpool and Wolverine" and "Inside Out 2." No other Hollywood studio had a film reach this amount last year.

"Moana 2" grossed $442.8 million at the domestic box office and $567.1 million in international markets, resulting in a total of $1 billion in ticket sales. This makes it the fourth film from the Walt Disney Animation arm to achieve this feat, alongside "Frozen," "Frozen II," and "Zootopia."

Disney has gained traction with its animated releases after struggling in the years following the pandemic. The company's difficulties were partly due to its decision to debut a few animated features directly on its streaming service Disney+, which trained parents to look for new content at home even after theatrical closures ended and films returned to cinemas.

"Inside Out 2" not only revitalized Disney's form but also kick-started the domestic box office in June. The film grossed over $650 million domestically and became the first movie since "Barbie" to reach $1 billion worldwide.

"Inside Out 2" surpassed $480 million at the global box office in 2024, making it the highest-grossing film of the year.

Disney's domestic box office revenue exceeded $2.2 billion last year, thanks to films such as "Deadpool and Wolverine," "Inside Out 2," and "Moana 2," which accounted for approximately 25% of the industry's total earnings, according to Comscore data.

Disney now has 32 billion-dollar movies, including three acquired from Fox in 2019. This accounts for nearly 60% of the highest-grossing films in cinematic history, with "Moana 2" being the latest to cross the billion-dollar mark.
