Stellantis chairman outlines planned U.S. investments for Jeep, Ram to Trump.
- During a dayslong trip before his Monday inauguration, President Donald Trump met with Stellantis Chairman John Elkann and discussed several upcoming plans for U.S. investments.
- The plans confirmed investments in plants in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
John Elkann, chairman of the Transatlantic automaker, revealed several upcoming plans for U.S. investments during a meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington D.C. before the inauguration.
The plans, as communicated in an internal message to U.S. employees on Wednesday, included creating 1,500 jobs, reopening a plant in Illinois to manufacture a new midsize pickup truck in 2027, building a new version of the Dodge Durango SUV at a Detroit plant instead of in Mexico, and providing additional support for plants in Toledo, Ohio, and Kokomo, Indiana.
Stellantis' North American operations head, Antonio Filosa, stated in a message that the company plans to continue its proud, over 100-year history in the U.S. by strengthening its U.S. manufacturing footprint and ensuring stability for its American workforce.
The construction of some announcements, including the midsize pickup truck in Illinois, was previously anticipated under a contract with the United Auto Workers union. However, these plans were later called into question due to strategic decisions made by former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares.
The union, which had been campaigning for Tavares' firing, hailed the announced plans after previously filing grievances and holding anti-Stellantis rallies over job cuts and potential changes to the company's production plans.
Fain stated on Wednesday that this victory is a proof of the strength of workers uniting and holding a billion-dollar corporation responsible. We have demonstrated our commitment to safeguarding the good union jobs that sustain communities such as Belvidere, Detroit, and Kokomo.
Fiat's CEO, Elkann, is currently overseeing the company during a search for a new CEO following Tavares' sudden departure in December, amid declining profits, slumping market share, and disagreements with the board.
Stellantis has plans to enhance the Jeep complex in Ohio by introducing new technologies and taking decisive action on the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator. Furthermore, the company aims to strengthen its facilities by adding more essential components.
According to the memo, the investments for Indiana involve the production of a new four-cylinder engine.
Filosa stated that our plans, centered on expanding market share and boosting sales volume, require a multibillion-dollar investment in our workforce, top-notch products, and advanced technology, all within the US.
On Tuesday, Reuters reported that Elkann met with Trump and several top administration officials before Trump's inauguration, despite not being invited.
Reuters reported that Elkann, who is also the chairman of , flew back to Italy before the inauguration to meet seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as the new Ferrari Formula One driver.
Bill Ford had a lengthy phone call with Trump earlier this month, making him at least the second leader of one of Detroit's "Big Three" automakers to meet or speak with Trump.
"Ford stated on January 9th during a Detroit Auto Show event that he had a lengthy conversation with someone who contacted him unexpectedly. The conversation was excellent, and the individual comprehends the significance of the automotive industry and Ford's role within it. They are eager to assist and believe that once their team is assembled, they will be able to delve deeper into the topic."
No immediate response was given regarding whether CEO and Chair Mary Barra recently met or spoke with Trump.
