- The Ocean SUV by Fisker was subject to voluntary recalls due to software-related problems.
- The company plans to fix these software issues through an over-the-air update process.
- The recall was announced amid three open NHTSA investigations into Fisker.
Thousands of Ocean SUVs in North America and Europe are being recalled by an electric vehicle startup due to software issues and non-compliance with federal safety standards.
Due to safety concerns, the company recalled 11,201 Oceans in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The affected vehicles may have problems with the Motor Control Unit and Vehicle Control Unit software, which could cause the vehicle to lose motor power, the company stated in a press release.
Fisker also recalled 6,864 Oceans in the U.S. and 281 in Canada due to non-compliance with federal vehicle safety standards related to gauges and telltale icons in the cluster display.
The company announced that it plans to resolve all of these problems through an over-the-air update process. Fisker stated that vehicles updated to OS 2.1 are not affected by the recall. Fisker expects to finish the software update process by June 30, 2024.
Fisker has experienced months of setbacks, with Reuters reporting in February that the company may not be able to continue as a going concern due to high interest rates causing a slowdown in demand.
In March, Fisker faced ongoing challenges as negotiations for a deal with a major automaker fell through, and the NYSE decided to delist the company's shares due to "unusually low" stock prices.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the 2023 Ocean due to complaints about the doors not opening properly. This is the third probe into Fisker, with additional investigations ongoing due to problems with the vehicle's brakes and unintended movement.
In 2023, Fisker delivered 4,929 Oceans, according to the company's February financial report, which is the most recent available. The company anticipates delivering between 20,000 and 22,000 vehicles in 2024.
The company informed its dealers of the recalls on May 30 and will notify owners by June 30.
