  • On Wednesday, the United Auto Workers union endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, as anticipated.
  • UAW President Shawn Fain has been outspoken against former President Donald Trump.

The union's endorsement of Biden shouldn't be surprising, as UAW President Shawn Fain has been critical of Trump and the Detroit union has a history of supporting Democrats.

Fain's criticism of Trump continued when endorsing Harris.

"Fain stated that our objective in the upcoming election is to defeat Donald Trump and elect Kamala Harris, who has a proven track record of benefiting the working class. We have the option to put a billionaire back in power who opposes our union's values or to elect Kamala Harris, who will stand with us in our fight against corporate greed."

After Biden withdrew his re-election bid and endorsed Harris to become the Democratic nominee against Trump, the endorsement was made.

Since Fain's election, Trump and Fain have been publicly trading remarks, with Trump calling for Fain's removal during a speech at the Republican National Convention earlier this month.

The union issued a statement labeling Trump a "scab and a billionaire," emphasizing that he represents the interests of the wealthy. The union made it clear that they do not support his views.

After Biden withdrew from the election, the UAW commended him and endorsed Harris, who joined union members on a picket line during a strike in 2019.

The union declared that the way forward is to defeat Donald Trump and his billionaire agenda and elect a working-class champion to the presidency, although they did not formally endorse Harris.

Securing the endorsement of the UAW is vital for any candidate aiming to win in Michigan, as the union's significant influence in the state can greatly impact the outcome of the election. The UAW, based in Detroit, has approximately 370,000 active members and 580,000 retired members, many of whom reside in the Midwest.

Fain declared on Wednesday that the choice for the next President of their one million active and retired members is clear, and they will elect Kamala Harris in November.

During the past two presidential elections, many Michigan voters who work in the automotive industry contributed to the victories of both Biden and Trump.
