The Polaris Dawn crew completes SpaceX's first historic spacewalk.
  • SpaceX pulled off its first private spacewalk.
  • Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis, two members of the Polaris Dawn mission's crew, emerged from SpaceX's Dragon capsule, shielded from the harsh conditions of space by the company's suits.
  • Isaacman and Gillis were outside the capsule for approximately seven minutes each, concentrating on evaluating the flexibility of their spacesuits.

In a historic first for a company, SpaceX successfully carried out its first spacewalk in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The private Polaris Dawn mission's marquee event was executed flawlessly, with two crew members, Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis, exiting SpaceX's Dragon capsule "Resilience." This marked the first time civilians, rather than government astronauts, conducted a spacewalk.

After exiting the spacecraft, Isaacman, the mission's benefactor and commander, remarked that Earth appeared to be a flawless world despite the workload we face at home.

An extravehicular activity, or spacewalk, is viewed by SpaceX as a vital step towards its objective of colonizing other planets.

SpaceX developed suits for astronauts to withstand the harsh conditions of space, in collaboration with Isaacman's Polaris Program. The mission, which is the first to include employees of the company, features mission specialist Gillis and medical officer Anna Menon.

The Polaris Dawn event lasted approximately two hours, during which the entire crew of four experienced the vacuum of space after the spacecraft's hatch opened. Isaacman and Gillis each spent seven minutes outside the capsule, with the primary objective of evaluating the mobility of their spacesuits.

On Tuesday, SpaceX launched a mission that included a spacewalk and the successful orbit of Polaris Dawn, which is the furthest humans have traveled in space since the Apollo program. Additionally, the spacecraft is conducting about 40 science and research experiments and raising funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Isaacman, the first person to travel to space as part of the Inspiration4 mission in 2021, is now leading the Polaris Program to further explore the possibilities of private spaceflight.

Isaacman stated to CNBC before the mission that the inspiration aspect of the project is what excites people, as anything that differs from what has been seen in the past 20 to 30 years generates curiosity and thoughts such as, "What will tomorrow bring or what will it be like a year from now?"
