The Family Vacation Guide compiled a new list of family-friendly airlines, with airlines from Asia dominating the rankings.

Thirty-four airlines were reviewed, and eight of the top 11 are based in Asia.

The ranking was determined by considering eight factors, such as seat comfort and pre-boarding for families, resulting in a total of 18 possible points.

It earned the highest score of 15 out of 18 points, but lost one point for charging extra for infants riding on laps, known as "lap fees."

Both Korean Air and Hainan Airlines received a score of 14 out of 18, placing them in a tie for second place. Neither airline offers free seat selection, and both charge fees for infants to sit in a lap.

This year, Skytrax World Airline Awards ranked the airline first for the fifth time, tying with and for fourth place. However, the airline lost points in seat comfort and infant lap fees.

All airlines except for Lufthansa provide kids' meals, free kids' entertainment, and allow strollers to be checked for free. On-board bassinets are available on all airlines except for Hawaiian Airlines. While all airlines charge lap fees, Hawaiian Airlines and Lufthansa do not.

Analyzing publicly available information, as of February 2023, The Family Vacation Guide Rankings provided a comprehensive evaluation of family vacation destinations.

Asia — big on family

According to Praowpan Tansitpong, an assistant professor at Nida Business School, the reason behind Asian airlines' dominance on the family-friendly list is due to a variation in business priorities.

She stated that over the past 20 years, Asian airlines have prioritized spending on enhancing amenities to attract passengers, while Western airlines have primarily focused on revenue management.

She added that a difference in culture may affect airline service.

"According to Tansitpong, Asian countries have a strong family orientation, with individuals having strong ties and pride in their families and groups."

She stated that while Western society places a high emphasis on individualism, Asians prioritize close family relationships, communal support, and reverence for elderly family members.

Most family-friendly airports in the world

The Family Vacation Guide conducted a family-friendly analysis of airports, taking into account on-time departure and cancellation percentages, the availability of free unlimited Wi-Fi, and the number of places to eat and activities to do. As a result, they produced a list.

1. Mexico City Juarez International — Mexico 2. John F. Kennedy International Airport — U.S. 3. O'Hare International Airport — U.S. 4. Philadelphia International Airport — U.S. 5. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport — U.S. 6. Frankfurt am Main International Airport — Germany 7. Toronto Pearson International Airport — Canada 8. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport — Indonesia 9. El Dorado International Airport — Colombia 10. Singapore Changi Airport — Singapore 11. Fukuoka Airport — Japan

Both Mexico City Juarez International and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport received the highest rating of 9.87 out of 10.

Gimpo International Airport in South Korea was ranked as the least family-friendly airport due to the absence of entertainment, dining options, and free Wi-Fi.

While there were only three Asian airports on the top 11 family-friendly airports list, Singapore Changi Airport and Japan's Fukuoka Airport tied for 10th place, both scoring an overall score of 8.68 out of 10.

This year, Changi Airport was named the "world's best airport" for a record 12th time at Skytrax World Airport Awards. With 214 places to eat and 204 things for passengers to do, the airport boasts a low cancellation rate of 0.4%. However, one issue that passengers may face is the lack of free unlimited Wi-Fi.

Why do airlines overbook flights?

The difference in performance between Asian airports and airlines on the lists could be due to airports and airlines having different objectives in planning and execution, according to Tansipong. Airports prioritize aircraft and ground safety services over family-oriented services.

Tansitpong stated that the research does not accurately depict the airports' capacity to cater to the requirements of family travelers, including playgrounds, family restrooms, and children's menus in restaurants.

The number of Asian airports on the family-friendly airports list has been accurately identified in this updated article.
